Blast from 2024 - Destruction and Rebuilding

Here is another Blast from the Past - in January of 2024, we had a serious cold spell. He had a couple of weeks where our highs never got about 25F and our lows were in the low double digits. I learned something about our house during this time, we had a single water line run in the attic to a hose big which was not insulated nor had a shut off.

One afternoon, everyone was away from the house. We get a call from Mitchell who was the first to get home and he says it's raining in the garage. Needless to say the pipe had burst - in 3 places. We learned that main shut off valve was not functional and so had to eventually turn off the water at the street.

After a month or so of fighting with the insurance company (State Farm), we got about $21K to fix it even though the cost to fix it was $25K. Insurance companies are not fun. I had professionals do the drywall work, painting and carpeting.

Here is what our Living Room looked like after the ceiling caved in
Once the drywall was up, I started on rebuilding the built ins and fire place. You can see the bases for the cabinet and the understructure for the mantle. Note I did wire for a possible future TV. Also I did the tile work and painted (fire paint) the inside of the firebox black
Cabinets were pretty basic
I added face frames and gromets for electrical pass throughs
Testing mantle pieces
I dovetailed all the pieces together to get a single mantle across fireplace and cabinets
Paint and hardware, now it's all done. Just need carpeting.
